What to expect at Apple's Digital Event Today: MacBook Pro,M1X Chip, AirPods 3 and More

So we're just few hours away now from apple's next digital event that will be streaming from apple park. The event is rumored to be packed with lots of surprises. Apple's first hardware event of the fall saw the launch of the long-awaited iPhone 13 lineup with a 120Hz ProMotion screen and upgraded cameras. Apple’s “unleashed” event is expected to unpack its latest silicon, new Macs, and more. While the new MacBook Pro models are touted as the highlight of the event, the company probably has other equally interesting announcements up its sleeve.

How to Watch Apple's Oct 18 Hardware Event

Before we get into all of the products we expect Apple to unveil at its hardware event tomorrow, let's quickly detail how you can watch the 'Unleashed' event. Like other recent Apple events, this will also be a virtual release and will be streamed live on Apple's official event page and YouTube channel on October 18 (Monday) at 10:00 AM PDT (1:00 PM EST, 10:30 PM IST or 6:00 PM BST). Here is what to expect from today’s event

New 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro

Rumors about the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models have been around for some time. And if the reports are true, we'll likely see Apple announce two new state-of-the-art MacBook Pro models at the next event. Considering that notebooks have been redesigned for several years, all eyes are on this big announcement.

Flat Edge Design

Going through the leaked images, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros will feature a flat-edged design in keeping with the newly launched iPhone 13 and iPad mini 6 series. In addition, the notebooks will have slimmer bezels for a modern look.

Another design element that might get a lot of attention is the removal of the “MacBook Pro” tag from the bottom of the screen. The reasoning behind this decision is simple. Apple wants to achieve an impressive frameless design and provide more screen space for its users.

Notch With Better Webcam

The future 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Professional models will have a notch that houses the webcam. According to the report, the notch will be similar in size to that found on the iPhone 12 series. While I'm not sure how it will work with Apple's existing desktop operating system, I don't think it's out of the question.

Also, if you've been active on Twitter recently, macOS Monterey users have noticed that the menu bar at the top is now thicker than in macOS Big Sur. They speculate that the thickening may be a clue to this change of project to come to accommodate the notch.

Knowing the fact that Apple is aiming for an end-to-end display, the inclusion of a small notch at the top with a better webcam seems to be in the realm of possibilities. Rumors suggest that the 2021 MacBook Pros unveiled at Apple's Oct. 18 event will have an updated 1080p webcam, which would be a significant improvement. Currently, MacBooks come with a below-average 720p webcam.

mini LED screen

After introducing a mini-LED screen in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2021, Apple is now rumored to equip upcoming MacBook Pro models with the same display technology. With mini-LED technology, notebooks will have a slimmer and lighter design. In addition, it will also bring many OLED-like benefits, including high contrast, dynamic range, truer blacks, and support for a wider color gamut.

ProMotion 120 Hz refresh rate

In an attempt to take over gaming laptops, Apple must introduce ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate support on new MacBook Pro models as well. With a higher refresh rate, MacBook Pros will provide smooth scrolling and an enhanced gaming experience. Thanks to the variable refresh rate, it would also help conserve precious battery life.

Based on display details leaked in a recent macOS Monterey update, True 2x retina resolutions appear to be on the charts for upcoming models. The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros likely feature a screen resolution of 3024 x 1964 and 3456 x 2234, respectively.

RIP Touch Bar, finally!

Without detracting from the Touch Bar's usefulness, I would go so far as to say that it has generally remained a “gimmick” that has failed to make the cut for most pros from day one. So, if Apple's expert analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is to be believed, Apple decided to ditch the Touch Bar in favor of a classic but friendlier design.

Touch bar would likely be removed on new MacBook Pro models

“ Touch Bars continue to be the No. 3 app, with an 18% unit share and 1.2% revenue share in Q1 21. We expect Touch Bars to be overtaken by tablets when Apple starts to adopt the 10.9” iPad AMOLED. In addition, our sources suggest that Apple may cancel Touch Bar in the future,” says a recent report by Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC).

Instead of the interactive OLED touch bar, the 2021 MacBook Pro models that will be unveiled at Apple's Oct. 18 show will feature a standard lineup of function keys. While it feels like stepping back in time, it's a smart move to get rid of the OLED touch strip and opt for physical keys to allow you to control certain functionality.

Apple's most powerful M1X chip

With the launch of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, Apple will completely get rid of Intel chips. This means that both the latest generation MacBooks will feature the fastest and most powerful Apple M1X chip . It has long been rumored that it will come and be the successor to the original M1 chip.

Equipped with a 10-core CPU that features eight high-performance cores and two energy-efficient cores, as well as a 16-core/32-core GPU, the M1X chip will put the MacBook Pro ahead of the competition in terms of speed and efficiency. In addition, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros entry-level models will have 16GB of RAM, but will support up to 64GB of RAM. As for storage, 512GB SSD storage will be standard across the board, with upgrades available at higher prices.

SD card slot, HDMI port and MagSafe

In what could be great news for developers who have complained about the lack of an SD card slot and an HDMI port on MacBook Professional models since 2016, the tech giant will likely add more ports to upcoming notebooks. Yes, it was in 2016, when Apple radically dropped most ports in favor of just USB-C ports on the MacBook.

In addition, MacBook Pro 2021 models should also bring back MagSafe magnetic charging in a more efficient iteration. The 14-inch and 16-inch Pro models that will launch at Apple's show today may feature a MagSafe charging port that will provide faster charging speed than the existing USB-C port.

Mac mini smaller and thinner

With an updated design and the same Apple M1X chip that should power the new MacBook Pros, the 2021 Mac mini looks ready for a big update. Following the reports, the updated Mac mini will also be unveiled at Apple's event today.

Featuring a smaller form factor and a plexiglass top over the aluminum case, the Mac mini will be more portable. It will have four Thunderbolt ports, one Ethernet port, one HDMI port and two USB-A ports, as reported. In addition, the new Mac mini will use the same magnetic power connector as the newly launched 24-inch M1 iMac.

Affordable AirPods 3

AirPods 3 were previously expected to arrive alongside the iPhone 13 series, but that didn't happen last month. Now, rumors suggest they will be announced alongside the new MacBook Pros. In terms of design, AirPods 3 will bear a striking resemblance to AirPods Pro.

 ------

The shorter poles and a redesigned charging case will make wireless headphones look modern. However, AirPods 3 will be available at a more affordable price and will not come with state-of-the-art features such as Active Noise Canceling. We will have to wait for the official event for more information.

macOS 12 Monterey release date

Although iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8 and tvOS 15 were released to the public in September, there is still no news about the release of Apple's latest desktop operating system-macOS 12 Monterey. As the new version of macOS usually comes after other software updates, the release date of macOS Monterey can be announced at the Apple event on today

WhatsApp to stop working on Windows Phones

WhatsApp to stop working on Windows Phones

The end of Windows Phone is getting closer, even though some users still enjoy the family devices and the mobile operating system of Microsoft. After losing support for several widely used applications, such as Instagram, the most famous messenger app in the world has indicated a date to close activities there.
According to WhatsApp's own  online FAQ, the app will be removed from the Microsoft Windows Mobile Store on July 1, 2019. Because development is no longer encouraged by the company itself, many features may stop working from that date
The closure of the support will take place on December 31 of this year. In the case of Android and iOS, support will remain quite active: in 2020, versions 2.3.7 of Android and iOS 7 or lower will no longer have standard development.

In the case that WhatsApp stops operating on your device, one of the possible solutions is to try to update the operating system. But if it is impossible, the only alternatives are to use similar applications such as Telegram or Messenger or buy a new device.

The company in 2016 devised a plan in which it reported that WhatsApp would no longer be compatible in the coming years with certain mobile devices that lacked the necessary capabilities to support some updates. "When we started WhatsApp in 2009, mobile phones were totally different from those of today," the company explained on its official blog.

Facebook's decision to end support for these apps is hardly surprising given the Windows Phone platform is officially dead. Even Microsoft will stop supporting the latest version of Windows 10 Mobile – 1709 – in December this year. The phones with Windows 10 Mobile 1703 will lose support in June itself. Many of the major apps have already stopped supporting Windows Phone devices.
It is unclear how many consumers are still using Windows Phone devices, but the number is unlikely to be significant.

The future of security is AI Microsoft

The future of security is AI Microsoft

AI and Machine Learning set to play a major part in Microsoft’s security strategy.

With AI becoming an increasingly common presence in many areas of work and business, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the security industry is also getting on board.

Both AI and Machine Learning technology can have a profound effect on the work of security experts, helping streamline processes and crunch huge mountains of data to help protect businesses of all sizes.

But how do you ensure that your organisation is grasping the potential of AI-powered security, and select the correct provider?

"To make AI and machine learning work you need big data, computing at scale and the right sort of software - and we have all of that,” Microsoft’s UK chief security advisor Sian John told TechRadar Pro at the company’s recent Future Decoded event in London.

"Microsoft has the strongest security culture of anywhere I've worked...we're the outside-in organisation.”

Microsoft has an enviable network of over a billion connected devices spread around the globe, feeding information and analysis to the company in order to help it stay abreast of all the latest threats.

The company has offered its Secure Score tool for some time, allowing customers to analyse just how secure their protections are, all powered by the AI services with Office 365 and Azure.

Microsoft also looks to work with its partners and customers to analyse specific needs which can then be addressed on a case-by-case basis, allowing users to tailor the company’s services into their company structure as needed.

"Across everything we're doing in security, machine learning and behavioural detection is at the absolute core,” John notes.

TechRadar Pro spoke to John after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had given a passionate speech (pictured above) on the theme of “tech intensity” impacting the speed of digital transformation, and she agreed that security has a crucial part to play in this process.

Nadella has said that AI will be “the defining technology of our time”, and that privacy is a human right, highlighting the heightened importance Microsoft is placing on its security practice.

John notes that even for a company the size of Microsoft, the need to demonstrate what its platforms can do to help secure organisations of all sizes is paramount.

“We have all this capability - now it's about helping organisations to make use of it,” she adds.

“You see it in the organisations that are doing really well - you'll see that their security teams are really innovative and engaged.”

“That's the really exciting thing about our industry as a cybersecurity person, the fact that  everyone's going through that change.”

“That's one of our main challenges - you have the tech, you have the capability, but how do you make it easy to engage with and operate?"

Samsung's foldable phone could cost over $1,700

Samsung's foldable phone could cost over $1,700

Less than a week since Samsung unveiled its "Infinity Flex" display for its upcoming bendy smartphone, a new report from South Korea claims to know the name, price and release date of the device. The Yonhap News Agency's industry sources suggest the phone will be dubbed the "Galaxy F" -- a name that's been floated about before, along with "Galaxy X" -- and will debut in March, around a month after a 5G-enabled S10. But it won't come cheap: Yonhap believes the bendy phone will be an exclusive device that could cost as much as $1,770, though it adds the company hasn't "settled" on a price.

Samsung, however, is keeping quiet this far ahead of launch. Last week, its mobile division's CEO, DJ Koh, said it plans to ship a million foldable devices in 2019. Thus far it's only revealed a prototype that looks like a regular smartphone (albeit bulkier), until it unfolds like a book into a 7.3-inch display that acts like a tablet. The "Infinity Flex" display uses panel bending tech, along with a new protective layer and an advanced polymer that's both flexible and tough. If it's a success, it may lead to more foldable gadgets from the company, including that rumoured folding Note phone and flexi-laptop displays.
Samsung's Foldable Smartphone is Finally Here

Samsung's Foldable Smartphone is Finally Here

People have been dreaming of foldable screens for years, and although some devices have experimented with the idea, it still needs to refine a lot of hardware and software before technology comes to our attention. But during the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC 2018), the world's largest smartphone maker has given everyone a taste of what's been waiting for so long with their new Infinity Flex Display.

Although Samsung was careful not to reveal much, the yet unnamed, foldable display device featured a flexible 7.3-inch screen, tablet size, but also another  inside screen, for all your normal smartphone needs. This is a traditional display - which Samsung is calling a "cover screen" - on the outside, so you can quickly access your phone without having to unfold it.

On the stage, the company's senior vice president, Justin Denison, said the company's new foldable device will be small enough to be pocketed, although it's hard to say how accurate this statement is until we see the device after completion.

Still, even in just a quick glance, Samsung's Infinity Flex Display seemed significantly more polished and ready for consumers than products like the recently announced Royole FlexPai . But more importantly, Samsung's flexible display represents a possible big change from the glass rectangles we've been using over the past decade, going now to something that can literally be folded and adapted to our needs.

Interestingly enough, it seems that Samsung's traditional "cover screen" on the outside of the device does not take full advantage of the front space of the device.

To do this, Samsung needed to completely rethink the traditional design of the smartphone, including the exterior of the device and how to make it fold properly, as well as redesign its internal components, studying where to put them on a phone that can move way older devices can not.

To address the first problem, Samsung designed new screen materials, including a flexible OLED layer and a backplane , which are layered under an ultra-thin polarizer, a new shock absorbing film and a more durable polymer cover window ( and flexible) on top. And to keep it all together, the company says it has created a new flexible adhesive capable of withstanding cracks or complete dismounting even after thousands of bends. That said, Samsung claims that its flexible screen is the thinnest screen the company has ever made.

To increase the potential of its Infinity Flex Display, Samsung has created a new multitasking interface that allows people to view up to three applications simultaneously across the device's 7.3-inch display. In addition, for the times when you want to make the transition from what you see on the smaller external screen of the phone to the large internal screen, Samsung worked with Google to create various user interface features such as App Continuity (or Continuity which allows your smartphone to make an uninterrupted transition from what you see on the external display to the home screen without any delay or short interruptions.

Unfortunately, Samsung has not given a date or even a timeline for when this device will be available (not even as a preview), although the company claims that the mass production of these screens should begin to grow in the coming months.

Even looking optimistically, it is still too early to say that the mission was a success. Flexible screens can still end up dying on the beach, like curved TVs and Google Glass. But at the same time, what Samsung showed on Wednesday (7) makes the idea of flexible phones far more tolerable than anything we've seen before.

The trend to see folding devices over the next few years has been confirmed with Google's announcement on Wednesday that the Android system would now support folding screens. The launch almost at the same time shows that there is a joint effort by companies to bring this new technology - something that other companies can also potentially take advantage of

WhatsApp to start showing ads soon

WhatsApp to start showing ads soon

The day we’ve been fearing is on the horizon: WhatsApp is getting ads. For real, this time.

In a comment to several publications in India. WhatsApp Vice President Chris Daniels confirmed that the popular messaging app will be placing ads in the Snapchat-like Status section:

“We are going to be putting ads in ‘Status’. That is going to be primary monetization mode for the company as well as an opportunity for businesses to reach people on WhatsApp.”

We’ve known for a long time that Facebook is planning on monetizing WhatsApp. In fact, co-founder Brian Acton – who left the company in 20127 – recently said Facebook apparently had plans to implement ads before it had even completed its acquisition of the service.

Those who’ve been using the app long enough will remember that prior to its Facebook acquisition, the app charged user $1 per year. Since making WhatsApp free – and drastically increasing user numbers – Facebook has discussed various approaches to monetize the app. These seemingly included the aforementioned Status ads, selling analytics, or charging a fee after a certain number of messages. Daniels’ comments suggest the company has settled on the former.

Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly when Status ads will arrive. Some reports claim they’ll roll out early next year, but in any case, it’s only a matter of time

Android developers can now force users to update their apps

Android developers can now force users to update their apps

At its Android Dev Summit, Google today announced a number of new tools and features for developers that write apps for its mobile operating system. Some of those are no surprise, including support for the latest release of the Kotlin language, which is becoming increasingly popular in the Android developer ecosystem, as well as new features for the Android Jetpack tools and APIs, as well as the Android Studio IDE. The biggest surprise, though, is likely the launch of the In-app Updates API.

While the name doesn’t exactly make it sound like a break-through feature, it’s actually a big deal. With this new API, developers now get two new ways to push users to update their app.

“This is something that developers have asked us for a long time is — say you own an app and you want to make sure the user is running the latest version,” Google senior director for Android product management and developer relations Stephanie Saad Cuthbertson told me. “This is something developers really fret.”

Say you shipped your application with a major bug (it happens…) and want to make sure that every user upgrades immediately, you will soon be able to show them a full-screen blocking message that will be displayed when the first start the app again and while the update is applied. That’s obviously only meant for major bugs. The second option allows for more flexibility and allows the user to continue using the app while the update is downloaded. Developers can fully customize these update flows.

Right now, the new updates API is in early testing with a few partners and the plan is to open it to more developers soon.

As Cuthbertson stressed, the team’s focus in recent years has been on giving developers what they want. The poster child for that, she noted, is the Kotlin languages. “It wasn’t a Google-designed language and maybe not the obvious choice — but it really was the best choice,” she told me. “When you look at the past several years, you can really see an investment that started with the IDE. It’s actually only five years old and since then, we’ve been building it out, completely based on developer feedback.”

Today, the company announced that 46 percent of professional developers now use Kotlin and over 118,000 new Kotlin projects were started in Android Studio in the last month alone (and that’s just from users who opt in to share metrics with Google), so that investment is definitely paying off.

One thing developers have lately been complaining about, though, is that build times in Android Studio have slowed down. “What we saw internally was that build times are getting faster, but what we heard from developers externally is that they are getting slower,” Cuthbertson said. “So we started benchmarking, both internally in controlled circumstances, but also for anybody who opted in, we started benchmarking the whole ecosystem.” What the team found was that Gradle, the core of the Android Studio build system, is getting a lot faster, but the system and platform you build on also has a major impact. Cuthbertson noted that the Spectre and Meltdown fixes had a major impact on Windows and Linux users, for example, as do custom plugins. So going forward, the team is building new profiling and analysis tools to allow developers to get more insights into their build times and Google will build more of its own plugins to accelerate performance.

Most of this isn’t in the current Android Studio 3.3 beta yet, (and beta 3 of version 3.3 is launching today, too), but one thing Android Studio users will likely be happy to hear, though, is that Chrome OS will get official support for the IDE early next year, using Chrome OS’s new ability to run Linux applications.

Other updates the company announced today are new Jetpack Architecture Component libraries for Navigation and Work Manager, making it easier for developers to add Android’s navigation principles into their apps and perform background tasks without having to write a lot of boilerplate code. Android App Bundles, which allow developers to modularize their applications and ship parts of them on demand are also getting some updates, as are Instant Apps, which users can run without installing them. Using web URLs for Instant Apps is now optional and building them in Android Studio has become easier.

Mark Zuckerberg in Trouble with UK Parliamentary

Mark Zuckerberg in Trouble with UK Parliamentary

Mark Zuckerberg has yet again rebuked a UK parliamentary request for him to testify. An international committee had called for the Facebook CEO to appear before it later this month.

Committee chairs from Australia, Argentina, Ireland and Canada have joined the UK in calling for Zuckerberg to participate in their inquiry into fake news and disinformation. But while pressure might be intensifying on him to testify, he turned down the invitation, with Facebook saying that it's not possible for Zuckerberg to appear before all committees that ask him to do so, the Associated Press reports.

The Facebook chief testified to Congress earlier this year in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and he's faced questions in the European Parliament, but he has repeatedly turned down requests from UK politicians to do the same there. Damian Collins, the chair of the UK parliament's media committee and the man who will head the international committee when it convenes November 27th, said five parliaments were now urging Zuckerberg "to do the right thing by the 170 million users in the countries they represent."

In a statement, Collins said, "Mark Zuckerberg has set himself the personal challenge of 'fixing' Facebook this year to prevent its misuse in our democratic process. By being unwilling to face questions about his progress, doubts about his ability to do so remain."

Apple Watches crushing after updating to the new watchOS 5.1

Apple Watches crushing after updating to the new watchOS 5.1

After updating their fancy new Apple Watches to the latest operating system, watchOS 5.1, some users are reporting that it has turned their devices into little more than jewelry.

When trying to install the update, some owners of the latest Apple Watch Series 4 have found their unit stuck on the Apple logo screen indefinitely, effectively ‘bricking’ their rather expensive devices.

Apple has apparently told some customers the update could take several hours, although many users have reported waiting for much longer with no change. Restarting the Apple Watch, or the paired iPhone, hasn’t fixed the issue for those affected either.

For those who've successfully been able to install it, watchOS 5.1 introduces new emojis, watch-faces and support for group FaceTime audio, as well as fixing some minor bugs.

While there is currently no official word from Apple, we’ve contacted them for a response and will update this story when we have more information. In the meantime, if you're a Series 4 Watch owner, we recommend holding off on installing this update until Apple has addressed the problem

Robots Building Other Robots A $150 Million Factory By ABB

Swiss engineering group ABB is one of the largest industrial robot makers in the country. It has announced plans for a new factory in China which will cost $150 million. It will be a modern plant equipped with sophisticated robots which will be used to manufacture other robots.

One of every three robots sold in the world went to China last year, according to ABB. It’s a key market for the company. China is ABB’s second largest market after the United States. This new factory will be located near the company’s robotics campus in China. It aims to be operational by 2020. Robots for customers in China will be produced at this factory in addition to those produced for export in other markets across Asia.

There’s an uptick in demand for industrial robots in China as manufacturers shift from human workers due to rising wages. The increased automation will also enable them to compete with countries that have a lower cost of manufacturing.

The factory will be spread over 75,00 square feet and will rely on software which allows humans and robots to work together in close proximity. ABB produces a variety of different robots which are used for things like manufacturing electronic devices to assembling cars.

Data breach Facebook says spammers were behind it all

Data breach Facebook says spammers were behind it all

More than two weeks after Facebook revealed a massive data breach, we still don't know who was using the flaw in its site to access information on tens of millions of users. Now the Wall Street Journal reports, based on anonymous sources, that the company believes spammers perpetrated the hack in an attempt to make money via deceptive advertising.

Facebook eventually said that about 30 million people actually had their login tokens stolen (you can see if your account was among them by checking this page), and said that the attackers took account details and contact information. Still, the paper said "internal researchers" believe the people behind it are existing Facebook and Instagram spammers who claim to run a "digital marketing company."

The lines between misinformation spread by nation-state sponsored trolls, shady analytics companies and spammers chasing trendy topics to make a buck have become increasingly blurred in recent years, so it's difficult to know if this adds up or if we'll ever know who exactly stole the information and where it ended up. Facebook VP Guy Rosen said on Friday that the company did not believe this attack was related to upcoming midterm elections, but other than indicating the FBI is also investigating, it hasn't publicly said anything else about who might have done it or why.

Samsung to launch a foldable phone soon

Samsung to launch a foldable phone soon

Samsung really wants us to be prepared for a foldable phone. Whether we’ll see one in November or three years from now is anyone’s guess, but the frequency of it being hyped by the company’s mobile leader is only increasing these days. This week, during the unveiling of their 18-camera phone, the Galaxy A9,000-mid-ranger, Samsung’s DJ Koh talked about foldable things again.

He said that it won’t be a “gimmick product,” that it will be around longer than six months, it’ll ship globally, and is definitely not another taco phone.

He also mentioned that it’s basically a tablet that folds up and can fit in your pocket. That’s funny because in September, Koh specifically said that he doesn’t just want this to be a phone that folds out into a tablet. He noted that he doesn’t understand why people would buy that.

Now, I’m on the side of believing that a 2-in-1 product that is both phone and tablet is actually a good idea. I never did understand his initial take, but maybe he just meant that it’ll need unique features, rather than just be a tablet. And I get that, but again, a phone that converts into a tablet for better media consumption or productivity or whatever is a decent idea. Outside of the coolness of folding up a gadget, a multi-use device is something I think people would buy.

Either way, we’ll probably see it in November at Samsung’s developer conference. If not, well, maybe in 3 years

Rolls-Royce to build self driven ships with the help of Intel

Rolls-Royce to build self driven ships with the help of Intel

By the year 2025  Rolls-Royce, the company which separated from the car brands of the same name wants to launch its first uncrewed ocean-going vessels. To build it fully autonomous ship, the company has come into an agreement with Intel to help realize their vision.
The company has already taking some steps, by launching its Intelligent Awareness system for crewed vessels earlier this year

The Intelligent Awareness System processes data inputs from LIDAR, radar, thermal cameras, HD cameras, satellite data and weather forecasts. With all of this data, a ship can maintain awareness of its surroundings, detecting objects as far as several kilometers away.

As part of its new deal with Intel, Rolls-Royce will use the company’s 3D NAND solid-state drives to store the data from this network p to a TB of data a day,  the system uses Intel Xeon Scalable processors on the ships themselves to run machine learning and inference workloads locally.
Most of the world's goods are hauled by cargo ships and Rolls-Royce believe that making this ships remote-controlled can improve safety and make fleets efficient.

“We’re delighted to sign this agreement with Intel and look forward to working together on developing exciting new technologies and products, which will play a big part in enabling the safe operation of autonomous ships,” said Kevin Daffey, director of engineering and technology and ship intelligence, in a statement. “This collaboration can help us to develop technology that supports ship owners in the automation of their navigation and operations, reducing the opportunity for human error and allowing crews to focus on more valuable tasks.”
Google's AI can detect breast cancer better than a doctor

Google's AI can detect breast cancer better than a doctor

In today's age of AI, Google has shown that AI could become a very important and valuable asset in cancer detection. Google's research department has developed a deep learning tool that can spot advanced breast cancer with a better and greater precision than pathologists.
Lymph Node Assistant, aka LYNA is a trained algorithm that can recognize the characteristics of tumors using two sets of pathological slides, giving it the ability to spot metastasis in a wide variety of conditions. The LYNA tool demonstrated incredible accuracy in determining whether breast cancer had spread to a patient’s lymph nodes.

LYNA was able to correctly distinguish a slide with metastatic cancer from a slide without cancer 99% of the time. Further, LYNA was able to accurately pinpoint the location of both cancers and other suspicious regions within each slide, some of which were too small to be consistently detected by pathologists.

In terms of diagnostic accuracy, pathologists in this study were able to more reliably detect micrometastases with LYNA, reducing the rate of missed micrometastases by a factor of two. Encouragingly, pathologists with LYNA assistance were more accurate than either unassisted pathologists or the LYNA algorithm itself, suggesting that people and algorithms can work together effectively to perform better than either alone.

This suggests the intriguing potential for assistive technologies such as LYNA to reduce the burden of repetitive identification tasks and to allow more time and energy for pathologists to focus on other, more challenging clinical and diagnostic tasks.

Netflix criticize the European Union over a new content quota

Netflix criticize the European Union over a new content quota

Netflix used its third quarter earnings report to criticize the European Union over a new content quota for streaming services.

The EU, writes Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in the report, is “currently rewriting its audio visual rules” that will demand streaming services like Netflix “devote a minimum of 30 percent of their catalog to European works.” Netflix’s report acknowledged that catering to a specific audience encouraged more regional original programming for international audiences, but suggested that enforcing quotas on a streaming service could have unwanted negative effects.

“We’d prefer to focus on making our service great for our members, which would include producing local content, rather than on satisfying quotas, but we anticipate that a regional content quota which approximates the region’s share of our global membership will only marginally reduce member satisfaction,” the report reads. “Nonetheless, quotas, regardless of market size, can negatively impact both the customer experience and creativity. We believe a more effective way for a country to support strong local content is to directly incentivize local content creators, independent of distribution channel.”
Netflix does already boast an extensive catalog of international content. Hastings and Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, have spoken at length in the past about developing original series and films for an audience outside of North America. The Financial Times reported in April that Netflix had plans to “double its production spend in Europe,” spending approximately “$1 billion this year, [and] producing 100 programs in 16 countries.”

“What’s in the back and front of my mind is sharing the world’s best content, whether that’s Japanese anime, Turkish telenovelas, the film noir of the Nordics,” Hastings told the Financial Times. “I’ve never been very Hollywood-centric.”

There’s extra incentives for Netflix to invest in international content. Nearly 79 million of Netflix’s total 137 million subscribers are international, according to the company’s earnings. Devoting space to that rapidly growing audience (up from 72 million last quarter) isn’t just something that will appease the EU — it’s smart business.

“We also continue to expand our international originals, with projects spanning India, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Germany, Brazil, France, Turkey and throughout the Middle East to just name a few,” the earnings report reads. “In India, our hit series Sacred Games was followed up by Ghoul in late August. La Casa de las Flores, our latest Mexican original, has become a big hit.”

Hastings has also previously said the company is interested in developing more Bollywood titles out of India and original anime in Japan.

Apple plans to begin accepting pre-orders for the iPhone XR

Apple plans to begin accepting pre-orders for the iPhone XR

Apple plans to begin accepting pre-orders for the iPhone XR on Friday, October 19 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time. The iPhone XR will see an official launch on Friday, October 26.

It is not clear why Apple's iPhone XR did not launch at the same time as the iPhone XS and XS Max, but rumors suggested there were production difficulties that ultimately led to delays. Apple is now said to be reallocating iPhone XR orders among its suppliers to make sure there's adequate iPhone XR supply at launch.

Design
The iPhone XR looks similar to the 5.8-inch iPhone XS, but it features a bigger 6.1-inch display, so it's a mid-sized phone that falls between the iPhone XS and the 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max. It is smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus that it is replacing, but with a larger screen.

Like the iPhone XS, the iPhone XR features an edge-to-edge display with slim bezels and no Home button, instead adopting a notch and the TrueDepth camera system for Face ID. Rather than using an OLED display, the iPhone XR is equipped with an LCD that has slightly thicker bezels than the XS due to the limitations of the LCD.

At the front of the XR, there's a notch that houses the TrueDepth camera system, speaker, and ambient light sensor, but other than that, the iPhone XR is all display.

The iPhone XR features a glass body in one of six colors along with a matching 7000 Series aluminum frame, which is lighter and less expensive than the stainless steel frame of the iPhone XS.

iPhone XR measures in at 150.9 mm tall, 75.7 mm wide, and 8.3 mm thick, which means it's thicker than the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, which measure in at 7.7 mm. It weighs 194 grams. For comparison's sake, the 5.8-inch iPhone XS is 143.6 mm tall and 70.9 mm wide, while the XS Max is 157.5 mm tall and 77.4 mm wide.

The iPhone Xs and Xs Max have a problem with their charging System

The iPhone Xs and Xs Max have a problem with their charging System

The iPhone Xs and  Xs Max are the most expensive smartphone ever announced by Apple. The owners of this eyewatering device are reporting that some of the devices have problems with the way they can be charged. Their device refuses to charge if it has been idle for a while. Some charge only if the display is "woken up".

“Chargegate” is the term associated with the problem, if the screen is turned off and the lightning cable is plugged in the device it does not start charging automatically.

A video posted to the Unbox Therapy channel on YouTube shows vlogger Lewis Hilsenteger demonstrating the issue.
The video was posted just this past Saturday. In the video, he tested nine iPhones by plugging them into an official Apple power supply.

In the video, Hilsenteger can be seen testing an iPhone X, four XS, and four XS Max phones.
In the video, the 2017 iPhone X charged perfectly but to his surprise, many of the new XS and XS Max phones refused to charge when plugged in.

On Apple's discussion forum on its website, a   number of complaints about the XS and XS Max failing to charge have also been posted there.

Some have also taking to social media to share their frustration, a number of people have described being unable to charge their phone at all once the battery is drained.

For some users of the product, they believe strongly that the problem might be related to a recent change in Apple's security settings.

The iOS 11.4.1 has a feature that allows the lightning port on iPhones to be disabled when the phone has been idle for a while.
The idea behind the change was to make it harder for thieves, cyber-attackers or law enforcement to gain access to the phone.

The company advises on its website in such a case the device might not charge..

Apple is yet to speak out about the issue.

These estimates don’t account for things such as research and development and marketing.TechInsights advised that the cost estimate was made with the information that was available.

But Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, is not much of a fan of these estimates. In 2015, he said the surveys do not reflect the true cost of the product.
